The Watchman

A Journal for Fathers

For the father who knows the schedule is covered but the souls might not be. A watchman’s job is simple: stay awake, see what is coming, and sound the call. For thirty days you will pray your children by name, study them like the assignment they are, and put a blessing in the air of your house every single day.

"Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it." — Proverbs 22:6 (NLT)

The house rule

“Pray them by name, out loud, every day. A father’s general goodwill is not intercession.”

What's inside

  • The Watch — daily — One page a day: pray each child by name, note what you actually saw in them today, and speak one blessing out loud before the day ends.
  • One On One — weekly — Every child gets undistracted time on the calendar. The log keeps you honest about whether it actually happened, which is a different question from whether you meant it to.
  • The Arrows Log — always — Every sign of God at work in a child — a question asked, a kindness shown, a conviction they arrived at on their own — gets a dated line. Arrows leave the quiver; the log stays.
  • Day Thirty — the look back — Thirty days of noticing, read in one sitting. Most fathers are startled by how much they saw once they started writing it down.

Why this one

  • It makes you specific. "God bless my kids" is not intercession; praying a named child for a named thing is.
  • It makes you observant. The daily note forces you to actually look at each child rather than manage them.
  • It puts a blessing in the air every day. Most men have never spoken one out loud over their children.
  • It keeps evidence. A father who has logged thirty days of small movements has something to stand on when a child goes through a hard year.

Who it's for

  • Fathers who cover every practice and permission slip and suspect the interior life is going unattended
  • Fathers of teenagers who have gone quiet and are not sure how to get back in
  • Fathers who travel and want the presence to survive the absence
  • Fathers of adult children who are wondering whether it is too late to start

Common questions

What if my kids are already grown?

Start anyway. Intercession does not have an age limit and neither does a blessing. Many fathers of adult children find that thirty days of praying them by name changes the father far more than it appears to change anything else — and that the change is what reopens the relationship.

What does it mean to bless a child out loud?

One spoken sentence over them, in their hearing, naming something true about who they are and calling God’s favour onto them. Not praise for performance — a declaration about their person. Most men have never done it, and most children never forget it.

Is Proverbs 22:6 a guarantee my kids will not walk away?

No, and treating it as one has wounded a lot of faithful parents. Proverbs are wisdom sayings describing how life generally works, not contracts. It tells you that early direction matters enormously. It does not remove your child’s will or make you the sole variable.

How long does the daily page take?

Five to ten minutes. Pray each child by name, write one line about what you saw in them today, and note the blessing you spoke. The weekly One On One log takes a minute.

What if I travel a lot?

The journal is built for it. The praying and the noticing happen wherever you are, and the blessing can be spoken on a call. The weekly one-on-one is the piece that needs your physical calendar, which is exactly why it is logged.

A word before you start

This journal is a spiritual practice, not a substitute for professional help. If a child is in crisis — self-harm, substance use, an eating disorder, or talk of suicide — get a licensed counselor involved now, and in the US call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Praying for your child and getting them clinical help are the same act of love, not competing ones.

Arrows leave the quiver. That was always the design. Your job is to aim them well while they are still in your hand.
